IRELAND WINS GOLD AT WORLD FINALS

Bartenders Association of Ireland at the 44th World Cocktail Championships

Ariel Sanecki, Senior Bartender at Adare Manor Hotel, Limerick won a Gold Medal for the Bartenders Association of Ireland in the Sparkling Cocktail Competition at the World Cocktail Championships (WCC), 1st- 6th October, 2018 in Tallinn, Estonia.

His cocktail named ‘Cocktail King’ was dedicated to the memory of the International Bartenders Association legend, Mr. Alex Beaumont who passed away suddenly this year.

‘Cocktail King’ is made with Finlandia Vodka, De Kuyper Elderflower Liqueur, Calvados, Reàl Agave Nectar Infused Syrup, Monin Rhubarb Puree and Schlumberger Dry Sparkling Wine (see full recipe below).

The WCC is the only worldwide independent cocktail competition with 60 countries invited to participate in six different competitions: Short Drink Cocktail Competition; After Dinner Cocktail Competition; Long Drink Cocktail Competition; Sparkling Cocktail Competition; Bartenders Choice Competition; Flair Cocktail Competition.

The highest scoring cocktails, as judged by a blind tasting panel situated away from the competition area, receive Gold, Silver and Bronze medal awards.

All six Gold Medal winners then compete in the ‘Super Final’ for the title of World Bartender of the Year.

The results of the ‘Super Final’ were:

  2. Ariel Sanecki, Ireland (Gold Medal Sparkling Cocktail)
  3. Danilo Oribe, Uruguay (Gold Medal Flair Cocktail)
  4. Agnieszka Cieslar, Poland (Gold Medal Long Drink)
  5. Yandery Crispin, Dominican Republic (Gold Medal After Dinner)
  6. Grétar Matthíasson, Iceland (Gold Medal Short Drink Cocktail)

The 44th World Cocktail Championships was organised by the International Bartenders Association and hosted by the Estonian Bartenders Association.

The prestigious title of the World Bartender of the Year 2018 was awarded to Ms. Karina Tamm from Estonia. The title comes with a great deal of recognition in the field, with the careers of quite a few winners over the years having taken off thanks to their world championship victory.

The World Cocktail Championships 2018 in Estonia offered tense competition and exciting performances. Visitors from a total of 67 countries attended the event, with competitors from 56 nations putting their cocktail-making skills to the test. The Bartenders Association of each country sent their best cocktail-makers into the medal fray in Estonia, with the best of the best coming away with medals at the end of two long days of competition. A lot of new and interesting ideas were presented in the competition, with plenty of inspiration being given to the audience which consisted of professionals from the industry worldwide.

The five day congress had a packed schedule of events including: the annual general meeting of the International Bartenders Association; workshops and master classes delivered by supporting brands; a cultural reception hosted by the Mayor of Tallinn; the World Cocktail Competitions in classic bartending and flair-tending culminating with a gala dinner and award ceremony in the Seaplane Harbour Maritime Museum, Tallinn.

Speaking on their return home, Declan Byrne, President of the Bartenders Association of Ireland commented: “Ariel has set a new record by winning a silver medal in Tokyo 2016 and now a gold medal in Tallinn 2018. Considering he came to Ireland from Poland with very little English and no bartending experience he has shown Ireland to be a true land of opportunity for those that work hard and never give up trying. The whole bartender community in Ireland are very proud of him and we wish him many years of success for the future. Thanks too to our National Cocktail Competition sponsor Edward Dillon & Co.
